Planning Tips Ways to Save Money around the Home
Best Ways to Save Money at Home Even making small changes in how we do things around the house can save us a lot of money. From turning out the lights when you leave a room to buying generic brands of products, it's certainly possible to keep more money each month if one pasy attention to where the money goes and then finds ways to reduce the amount spent in different categories. Here are a few simple ideas on how to save more money in your household that could very well add up to quite a bit over time.
Soaps and Cleaners:
Make your own liquid hand soap.-By melting those small pieces of hand soap that are too small to use anymore in the microwave with some water, you can create your own hand soap to use at the kitchen and bathroom sinks. You can save the plastic container that housed the last liquid hand soap you'll ever have to buy and use it again to hold the new, homemade soap.
Make your own laundry detergent.-Using borax, laundry soda, powdered soap, and essential oil, you can create your own laundry detergent that works as well as the store-bought kind. You'll have supplies left over to create your next batch, too.
Double shampoo by diluting it.-Pour half of a bottle of shampoo into another container, and fill both bottles up with water. This will double the amount of shampoo that you will have for the price of one bottle.
Buy bulk cleaning solution and dilute it.-You can purchase large refill bottles of cleaning solution for the kitchen and bathroom. By putting some solution in a separate spray bottle and diluting it according to the instructions on the back of the refill bottle, you can save some money on your household cleaners.
Discover the wonders of baking soda and vinegar.-Cleaning and deodorizing toilets, cleaning windows, removing juice stains from counters, and cleaning some metals are just a few of the ways that you can use baking soda and vinegar around the house to clean. Do some research for your particular cleaning need, and you'll likely find a way to utilize these two very inexpensive products to clean your home.
Newspaper makes good window rags.-Old pieces of newspaper can be used to clean car and house windows. Just crumple up and wipe off a solution of vinegar and water from the window!
Grocery bags make good trash can liners.-If you use plastic grocery bags when you shop, you can reuse them at home as trash can liners in your office, bedrooms, and bathrooms. They are also good for taking lunch to work or school, or carrying items back and forth that you need during the day from home to work or school.
Wash in cold water, and hang up your clothes.-Using cold water saves money on the energy costs of using hot water, and not running your dryer to dry every load can save money on your electricity bill.
Cooking:
Reduce dinner portion sizes and freeze the rest.-Make a full-sized dinner for your family, but serve just a little less than you might on an ordinary, not-caring-about-saving-money night. You can then freeze the rest of the meal for use the next week. This reduces the "I refuse to eat leftovers" complaints you may hear, and it will free up a night of dinner for use the next week. You can serve the reduced portion the next week with some new sides such as salad or bread to make it a little different. You can also just make less dinner and use the rest of the ingredients to make something with the next week.
Start out with hot water when you boil.-Using hot water from the tap or even heating water in an electric kettle before you bring water to a boil when you cook can not only save money on energy used to heat the water to boiling, but it can save you time while you try not to watch the pot. Keep the lid on the pot when you boil water to keep the heat in, too. This saves more energy, time, and money.
Other Household Money-Saving Ideas:
Batteries-Don't throw old batteries away just because they won't power your energy-sucking radio anymore. There might be enough power left in them to run a small analog clock or power your remote control for a little while. Also, using rechargeable batteries, though requiring a higher up-front cost, will save you money on batteries over the long run.
Air Fresheners-Make your own air fresheners by drying out orange peels, or putting out a small dish of vanilla. This can save a lot of money on plug-ins and sprays.

Quick Tip: Candles
Candles refrigerated for eight hours before they are used can last
longer than those that are not. Create a special evening in your house
once a week where candles are used in lieu of electricity. This can
save money on electricity as well, if not more than, turning out the
light when you leave a room.
